- Sacred Seal: Many of such signet rings had religious significance attached to them. Even today the Signet rings worn by the Pope happen to be the most significant and recognized rings in the world. A new ring is created for every Pope and upon their death, the ring is broken by the Cardinals. Such rings also denote the sign of authority.
- Recognition/Status Symbol and Rank: These rings or seals provided visual and symbolic “certification” to the individuals carrying them. In other words, a visual evidence proving that the wearer was truly who he said he was. They also symbolized his power in the community. This also validated their entry to different places, movement across provinces/states and acts executed by the bearer in his name.
- Seal of Distinction: Such rings marked the dignity and importance of its wearer. They were also a mark of distinction which separated the bearer of the ring (mostly the officials or Individuals with high Social Standing) from the ordinary people. Signet ring was therefore considered a rich ornament and restrictions were put on making such rings.
The theft of a signet ring was, many times, punishable by death.
